Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Correlation Between Coping Skills And Excessive Drinking, And The Necessity For Coping Skills Training

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol addiction experts assert that beer, liquor, and wine advertisements produced by the media are a key reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol abuse experts state that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and convenience of alcohol. Still other alcohol abuse experts think that many of our young people involve themselves in alcohol abuse because of the increased disquiet that they experience.

From a somewhat different viewpoint, due to the fact that both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance surely has to play a significant role in the increase in teenage alcohol abuse. And lastly, various alcohol abuse professionals believe that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due, to some extent, to our permissive society.

One aspect of teen alcohol abuse that seems to be lacking in the alcohol addiction research findings, on the other hand, is the lack of educational courses that teach students how to enhance their coping skills so that their excessive and abusive drinking behavior is significantly reduced or eradicated. More to the point, science has demonstrated that there is an indirect link between poor coping skills and hazardous drinking.

Essentially, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the higher the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid argument, why isn't coping skills training a significant part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to develop solid coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their final year in high school. In such a society, when life gets challenging, students who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a healthier and more productive way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to implement their coping skills.

Stated differently, students who reveal solid coping skills will be more able to think proactively and display quality decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop quality coping skills, gravitate to the "quick fix" of hazardous drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, in addition, if students not only received first class coping skills training but also received an excellent education that outlined the short term and long term negative costs associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills training, it is asserted, would help teenagers stay away from the apparent charm associated with youth drinking and, as a result, would significantly reduce the alcohol abuse exhibited by adolescents in our country.

There are obviously many valid reasons why so many of our teens abuse alcohol. Such a complex problem demands a comprehensive and relevant response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's problems in a more productive and accountable way rather than resorting to alcohol abuse to solve their problems.
