Work was becoming too chaotic for a young police officer named Lonnie. Although he had only been on the police force for two years, he was already known as a hard worker who almost never refused working overtime. In fact, he was now working twenty-five to thirty hours of overtime each week and, consequently, he felt like he was losing his grip on his personal life. What made the situation more complicated, however, was the fact that Lonnie started going out drinking with a gang of fellow officers after work.

Plainly Lonnie was in a rut and experiencing some negative signs of alcoholism. Where Lonnie truly noticed alcohol related problems and alcoholism signs, on the other hand, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn't really a nag, but she regularly asked him to stay at home more with the family instead of going out and wasting money while drinking with his buddies.

In his heart of hearts, it was clear to Lonnie that his irresponsible and hazardous drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. So one Friday morning Lonnie got energized and made up his mind to talk to Richard, a trusted old police officer friend that he greatly respected.

Lonnie told Richard how abusive and excessive drinking was negatively affecting his relationship with his family, health, pocketbook, and his work. Richard articulated to Lonnie that he totally understood because approximately thirteen years ago, he too got involved in excessive and hazardous drinking. Indeed, Richard mentioned to Lonnie that abusive and excessive drinking can create so many problems in a person's life that virtually everything of importance can be destroyed. And lastly, Richard recommended that Lonnie make an appointment with an alcohol counselor at the work-affiliated drug and alcohol abuse rehab center.

Due to the fact that his employee's assistance program was affiliated with this rehabilitation center, it was not only convenient but also quite affordable to seek guidance about his excessive and hazardous drinking. And due to the fact that the personnel at the drug and alcohol treatment center was supportive, non-judgmental, and competent, Lonnie would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.

After talking to his doctor about how his drinking was ruining his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health, Lonnie understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his irresponsible and hazardous drinking. Once he realized that he was digging himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the assistance his counselor, and after fourteen weeks in therapy, he was finally able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.

The outcome was that Lonnie perceived life in a different way now that he was in alcohol recovery and learned about alcoholism facts. Stated briefly, due to his alcohol rehabilitation he not only felt better and more healthy, but he had more quality time to spend with his family, he was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, and he noticed that he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week. Paradoxically, now that he quit drinking, Lonnie and his wife were not only starting to save some money for a new house but he also felt more alert and more energized than anytime since he and his wife got married.
