To say that my parents weren't thrilled when I decided to go to cosmetology school is an understatement. They were certainly horrified. I was going to a great one, but they did not care. The Aveda cosmetology school, you see, wasn't a high-status institution. My family had been attending Princeton University for about three generations now, and beauty colleges were out of the question. They did not see the beauty profession as a reputable field. Like many individuals, they thought it was just something for secondary school dropouts to do. What they didn't realize was that beauty colleges were my passion. It was not just an easy job for me to get. It was something that I wished to do for a job.

What bothered me most about the response they had to my cosmetology schools decision was the malice in their eyes. It pretty much said to me that, if I were to go to cosmetology school, I would not be their child anymore. The weird thing is that they have stood by me through every situation. Cosmetology schools were impossible, but when I was expelled for getting in fist fights, they barely punished me at all. It was as if, as long as I was doing anything that was considered reputable for men to do, I was alright. When I made the decision to go to cosmetology school, however, it was something different. They did not say it out and out, but it was obvious that they had worries about my lifestyle. I did not care. It was what I wished to do, and it was what I would do.

It turns out that beauty school didn't work out exactly as I had thought. Don't misunderstand me - I loved the work. The problem was that it was not something that I could see myself doing for 10 or 20 years. I had an apprentice-program with a wedding photographer, and I adored going out on assignments with the wedding photographer and doing make-up for the brides. However, I could not see working for a wedding photographer forever. I finished the cosmetology school that I was attending, got a job, and used that to pay my way through college. Cosmetology schools were just a transitory phase after all. Nevertheless, I am glad that I made the determination that I did. If I hadn't tried out going to beauty colleges, I never would have known if I was making my own decisions. I wouldn't have been able to engage in college, because I would have believed that I was only doing it because my folks wanted me to. By trying out beauty colleges, however, I was being my own man.
