A Woman Exhibits Signs Of Depression And Alcohol Addiction And Makes An Appointment To See Her Healthcare Professional

Cindy was a thirty-year-old receptionist who knew that she had some drinking issues. For instance, within the past month she has felt the need to have a few drinks before going to work, two weeks ago she tested positive for a urine alcohol test at work, two weeks ago she got arrested by the state highway patrol for "driving under the influence", and lastly, for around three months she has started to fail to remember what she says and does when she goes out drinking.

Not unlike multitudes of other drinkers, Cindy's alcohol involvement started out at a "snail's pace" and continued at this speed for quite some time due to the fact that from time to time she engaged in sporadic social drinking. In actual fact, for around two years, every time she went out to drink, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking circumstances, however, seemed to fundamentally change when she divorced her husband.

Cindy got exceedingly dejected about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to stop obsessing about her negative emotions she decided to start palling around more routinely with some of her buddies who love to party. It didn't take long, however, before her drinking increased to a significant extent the more often she went to and drank at private parties, family get-togethers, dinner dates, sporting events, and happy hours with her pals.

In brief, she was having fun drinking just like everyone else in her group of friends without giving too much consideration about the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been manifesting. Yet in the back of her mind she knew about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the mind and that she probably needed alcohol treatment but sidestepped the thought as much as possible.

One late afternoon during her annual physical, her physician asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to tell "stories" to her physician, Cindy admitted that she frequently drinks more than she should. In actual fact, she stated that she commonly drinks in an abusive manner. Then Cindy told her physician about her constant negativity. More precisely, she mentioned that broken relationships usually triggered a discouraging cycle of events typified by increased drinking which further led to more disheartening feelings that, in turn, resulted in more drinking. And this is exactly what happened when she and her husband got divorced three years ago.

Cindy's healthcare professional then told her the following: "I am not trying to make a spur-of-the-moment diagnosis, but with your medical circumstances we may be facing two separate issues. As a result, I think we need to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse evaluation from my partner, Dr. Galloway, who is a drug and alcohol addiction specialist."

"Whether your drinking situation is more associated with alcohol abuse or alcoholism is not clear, but I think that further exploration is defensible. Then I think we ought to make an appointment for you to get a psychological evaluation from another one of my partners, Dr. Cohen, who is a psychologist."

"I want to get a better read on your depression and see how much your depression and drinking are interrelated." Cindy expressed her approval of her healthcare practitioner's strategy and thanked him for his help.
