A Night Out With School Pals At A Local College Discotheque Leads To Hazardous And Excessive Drinking And Symptoms Of Alcohol Poisoning

When Lois was in high school, she had obtained a reputation as a studious person who rarely, if ever, drank with her pals. She seemed determined to "stand out" academically so that she would be able to find a career that she not only enjoyed but one that also gave her a degree of monetary stability.

After Lois finished high school, she applied to and was accepted into a distinguished program in sociology. Her logic for this decision was that this subject would be good preparation for law school and would not be comparable to the majority of law school applicants who decide to take political science as their undergraduate major.

Lois was the kind of individual who worked attentively to complete what she started and then would take a breather when she could. As is the case, however, nearly all of the things she did between school sessions or during summer breaks did not involve drinking. Evidently, Lois was anything but a party-person. Now that her final examinations for her second year in law school were completed and realizing that she had done extremely well on her exams, nevertheless, she wanted to let her hair down and have some fun.

So Lois and a few of her friends from the university went to a local bar and grill where they had a few cocktails. As the evening moved forward, Lois and her friends continued to drink. In actual fact, she was having such a great time that she didn't want the night to end.

After drinking around forty-five minutes when Lois started to speak in a confused manner, slur her words, and then become unconscious, nonetheless, her classmates immediately knew that they needed to call that they needed to call the emergency number and ask for medical assistance because they thought that Lois was exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms.

Lois was attentive to the fact that she came an inch from losing her life from an alcohol overdose and, consequently, was thankful to be alive. At the same time, however, she was somewhat depressed knowing that she had almost died the previous night. Her parents were aware how relentlessly she worked in graduate school and how little she let herself experience a social life. Nevertheless, they also realized that Lois needed to steer clear of irresponsible drinking.

Consequently, they suggested that down the road, whenever a drinking occasion presents itself, that she always drink in moderation. Lois was fine with this and assured her Mom and Dad and her friends that she would never again drink in an abusive manner. In Lois's own words, "I never had a clue that I might become one of the alcohol poisoning statistics in the local college newspaper. I now know that abusive and excessive drinking is not for me. I assure everyone that this will never happen again."

Fortunately, Lois was not only "book smart" but she also possessed. Stated more explicitly, she immediately grasped the fact that she had made an error and decided that she would never make the same error again. In truth, she now knew that she had involved herself in "binge drinking" and that even one instance of this form of careless and irresponsible drinking can end in a loss of life.
